Det här är en bok för alla som uppskattar hisnande vackra formuleringar. Man vill äta upp språket, så vackert är det. Ett litet smakprov:

"Let me be drawn into the immensity. Into the darkness, where nothing can be known. Once there were creatures of light leaping across the firmament, and the pattern of their movement filled the heavens. But the creatures soon fled and in their place appeared great spheres of crystal which turned within each other, their song vibrating through all the strings of the world."

Mmmm.

Ackroyd är för övrigt författaren till den alldeles lysande "London: A Biography", förmodligen den bästa bok om min älsklingsstad som någonsin skrivits.
